Reproductive Partners-UCSD Regional Fertility Center Opens State-of-the-Art Women’s Surgery Center Specializing in Fertility Procedures

January 23rd, 2012 by admin

San Diego, CA. – A new women’s surgery center is now serving patients at Reproductive Partners-UCSD Regional Fertility Center. The fully accredited La Jolla Women’s Surgery Center is part of an expansion of surgical services by Reproductive Partners, one of the most successful fertility centers in the nation.

“Patients undergoing in vitro fertilization appreciate the convenience and capabilities of the new surgery center,” said Clinical Supervisor, Ashley Williams. “The additional space means improved scheduling for our patients. And the operating room with its advanced technology and state-of-the-art equipment allows our physicians to perform procedures, such as hysteroscopies, onsite at Reproductive Partners.”

“Before our new surgery center opened, patients needed to have some procedures, including hysteroscopies, performed offsite,” explained Medical Director Dr. Gabriel Garzo. “Now, there’s a continuity of care we can offer our patients that streamlines the entire treatment process.”

The La Jolla Women’s Surgery Center is located on the eighth floor of the Ximed building, adjacent to the current Reproductive Partners-UCSD Regional Fertility Center office suite. It specializes in Egg Retrievals for in vitro fertilization, Dilation and Curettage (D&C) procedures, as well as both Diagnostic and Operative Hysteroscopies.

“Now that we have physically expanded our facilities, we’re able to accommodate the very latest reproductive technology for our patients who are undergoing diagnostic testing in our surgery center,” said Dr. Garzo. “Our new GE Voluson is powerful ultrasound equipment that improves the ability of our physicians to image ovaries, the uterus and early pregnancy. It helps us to better diagnose and treat uterine pathologies.”

The La Jolla Women’s Surgery Center is fully accredited by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities, Inc. (AAAASF) and has met all requirements for Medicare certification.

Reproductive Partners-UCSD Regional Fertility Center is a center of excellence for in vitro fertilization and recognized nationwide for its extremely high success rates and pioneering work in reproductive science. Its team of respected physicians, nurses, embryologists and staff are dedicated to helping couples achieve their dreams of starting and expanding their families.

Optimization of Risk Reduction of Multiple Gestation in ART

January 8th, 2012 by admin

Grand Rounds

Title: "Optimization of Risk Reduction of Multiple Gestation in ART"
Date:  1/11/12, Time 2:00 PM

Address:
Department of Reproductive Medicine
University of California, San Diego
9500 Gilman Drive, 0633
La Jolla, CA 92093

In his talk, Dr. Garzo emphasized the need to decrease the risk of multiple pregnancies, including twin pregnancies, by decreasing the number of embryos transferred to the uterus.  In good prognosis patients undergoing In-Vitro Fertilization (patients less than 35 years of age and egg donor cycles) with good quality embryos, only one embryo can be transferred with excellent chances of pregnancy.  Performing an elective single embryo transfer (eSET), Reproductive Partners-UC San Diego Regional Fertility Center has achieved an 81% clinical pregnancy rate per embryo transferred in 128 such patients over the last five years.

What can I do on my own to improve my fertility?

October 18th, 2011 by Dr. Conway

From making healthy lifestyle choices to supplementing your intake of important nutrients, there are many things you can do outside of the clinic to improve and maintain your chances of becoming pregnant. The following are a few of the most important changes you can make.

Lifestyle Modifications:

  • Avoid excessive alcohol use. Excessive alcohol use has been shown to cause birth defects in fetuses. In addition, those patients who drink may show a decrease in fertility rates. Miscarriage rates have been shown to double when 2 or more alcoholic drinks per day are consumed.
  • Stop smoking. Smoking has been implicated in infertility and premature menopause. Studies comparing smokers to nonsmokers show lower fertilization rates
  • Stop recreational drugs and unnecessary medications. Please stop all medically unnecessary drugs prior to attempting pregnancy. If you are taking other medication prescribed by another physician, please let us know so we can determine if this medication is safe to take during pregnancy. This goes for your partner as well. Recreational drugs such as marijuana are never a good idea, especially when you are trying to conceive
  • Increase physical activity and lose weight if necessary. If you are overweight, it is a good idea to lose weight before trying to conceive. We encourage you to be physically active and to get your body into the best shape you can.

Dietary Modifications:

  • Increase your intake of natural antioxidants by eating pomegranate, blackberries, blueberries, and lots of fruits and vegetables every day.
  • Drinking daily green tea also increases antioxidant intake, however we do not recommend over one cup of caffeinated green tea per day because the caffeine could interfere with fertility treatment.
  • Excessive consumption of caffeinated products such as coffee, tea, colas, and chocolate should be avoided. Decrease in fertility rates have been seen in those women who consume excessive amounts of these products. (i.e. more than 3 cups of coffee/day)

Antioxidant Supplements:

  • Pycnogenol is a potent antioxidant. Recommended intake is 50-120 mg per day. This can be particularly useful for women 40 years of age and older.
  • Co Enzyme Q-10 is very important for energy production and mitochondrial nutrition in the cell. In animal studies, it has been shown to reverse the effects of aging on the egg (this has not been proven in humans). The recommended dose is 400 mg twice a day.

Other Supplements:

  • Prenatal vitamins contain all the vitamins and minerals that you need for pregnancy. It is recommended that you have at least 0.4mg of Folic Acid in your diet every day. All prenatal vitamins have this amount or more.
  • Folic acid is a B vitamin that helps prevent fetal neural tube defects, and the recommended daily allowance is 400 micrograms. If you are on a prenatal vitamin containing folic acid, you do not need further amounts unless told otherwise by your doctor. Folic acid is also found in many fortified cereals and green leafy vegetables
  • Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA/DHA) are healthy essential fats that have been shown in some studies to improve fetal brain development; therefore, prenatal vitamins often contain them. Daily dosing is 500 to 1,000 mg of EPA/DHA.
  • L-arginine is a protein we recommend if you are a vegetarian and you protein intake is low. A dose of 1,000 to 2,000 mg will help to bring your intake up to normal levels.

Stress and Fertility Treatment

September 16th, 2011 by Dr. Conway

The uncertainty of the fertility treatment outcome, the sense of a lack of control, and the probing questions from friends and family, can make fertility treatment an extremely stressful experience. When treatment cycles end in disappointing news, like no pregnancy or a pregnancy loss, the emotional effects can be devastating. Recognizing the signs of stress before they become excessive can make a huge difference in maintaining healthy relationships, and having a better chance to achieve your dream of having a healthy child. We at RPMG actively encourage our patients to seek health-promoting, stress-reducing activities like yoga, exercise, meditation, or acupuncture. Some patients will find stress relief through support groups such as Resolve, or through a Mind-Body program. Others seek counsel through referral to a psychologist who specializes in infertility. The bottom line is that individuals/couples and we as physicians need to recognize the importance of integrating effective methods of stress reduction into the treatment process. RPMG is dedicated to helping you achieve this goal.

San Diego’s First Successful Egg Freezing Pregnancies at Reproductive Partners-UCSD

San Diego's First Successful Egg Freezing Pregnancies at Reproductive Partners-UCSD
Advanced “Flash Freezing” Technique Gets Results

San Diego, CA. – For the first time in San Diego County, fertility experts have successfully achieved two clinical pregnancies using a new egg preservation technique known as vitrification or “flash freezing.” Specialists at Reproductive Partners-UC San Diego Regional Fertility Center today announced that two of three patients who underwent the freezing technique are now expecting—one is pregnant with twins. The center specializes in advanced in vitro fertilization services. “It’s a breakthrough for us on our very first attempt at this technique,” said Dr. Deirdre Conway, a fertility specialist with the center. “Two of the three patients we worked with are now mothers-to-be. Our recent success with ongoing pregnancies conceived through egg freezing marks another milestone in fertility preservation. It brings tremendous hope to so many people.”

One of the local success stories is patient Shannon Taylor. “My husband and I are ecstatic. Yesterday we were running out of options and today we’re expecting a child. You have no idea how thrilled we are to be starting our family, at last.”

For years, egg freezing—also known as oocyte cryopreservation—has been at the forefront of fertility preservation research. In the “flash freezing” process, a patient’s unfertilized eggs are placed in a special vitrification (freezing) solution, which helps to protect the eggs during the freezing and warming process. Each egg is carefully placed into liquid nitrogen and stored frozen at -196° Celsius. Eggs remain frozen in a liquid nitrogen storage tank in the center’s laboratory until the patient is ready to conceive. The technique allows more eggs to survive the warming process than using previous methods.

“Today, if a woman is busy pursuing a career or doesn’t yet have a partner, she can freeze her unfertilized eggs until she’s ready for motherhood,” explained Dr. Gabriel Garzo, the center’s medical director. “It’s also an option for cancer patients who want to preserve their fertility before undergoing challenging treatments like chemotherapy. Our advanced technique gives these women choices they’ve never had before.”

Reproductive Partners-UC San Diego Regional Fertility Center has a history of providing cutting edge care to patients. Its fertility experts achieved the first Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) birth in San Diego. PGD is a type of genetic testing performed on embryos during in vitro fertilization that enables the transfer of the healthiest embryos.

August 17th, 2011 by Dr. Conway

Reproductive Partners-UC San Diego Regional Fertility Center is very proud to announce the recent success from our new egg, oocyte, freezing program. Using the new technique called vitrification, “flash freezing”, we have achieved the first successful clinical pregnancies from frozen eggs in San Diego. Out of our first 3 attempts at warming eggs, two patients have successful ongoing clinical pregnancies. Our success with this new and improved technique for egg freezing marks a milestone for fertility preservation for women in San Diego, allowing individuals to postpone childbearing without compromising their fertility. We are thrilled to offer our patients the most advanced technique available for egg and embryo freezing. For more information about our egg freezing program see our egg freezing program page.

Reproductive Partners-UC San Diego Regional Fertility Center has a long standing history of providing state of the art care in helping patients achieve dreams of creating their families. We also achieved the first Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) birth in San Diego County in 2001.

The New Voluson Ultrasound Imaging System Helps to Enhance Our Clinical Care

June 29th, 2011 by Dr. Su

This month, we have added new ultrasound systems to enhance our clinical care!

We are excited about using the powerful Voluson imaging platform to improve our ability to image ovaries, the uterus and early pregnancy. With these new ultrasounds, we have been able to look at the tiniest structures with stunning clarity, capture 3-dimensional images and record 4-dimensional clips. The 3-D images have already helped us to automate and standardize calculating follicle growth on the ovary. Soon, we hope to be able to pass on some of these amazing recordings of early pregnancy ultrasounds to our patients!

New IVF Cost Calculator Helps Estimate Cost of IVF Treatment

May 5th, 2011 by admin

Today we launched our personalized IVF Cost Calculator. This new tool guides you through dozens of options that potentially affect the cost of IVF treatment, identifying which ones are applicable to your case and explaining each cost related item. It is our goal to provide you with a more accurate cost estimate for IVF treatment even before you come in for your initial consultation.

Many clinics do not include cost of medication, initial tests and other important factors that should be factored into the total cost estimate. They try to low ball an estimate and then explain away the differences after the fact.

Our approach to treatment is different. Just like with our success rates, we believe in transparency and setting your expectations appropriately right from the beginning.

We would love your feedback on this new feature to our website. Please feel free to leave a comment below.
